The essence of true renunciation lies not in abandoning the physical world or the pleasures of the senses. You may live alone in a forest somewhere and stand on one leg for 10, 20, 30 years, or bend the capacities of the mind to certain peaks, and yet without even a single glimmer of clarity into your own nature. It is essential for those along the path to understand that the true essence of renunciation is an inward renunciation, having little to to with external objects. It is not abandoning the world. It is the abandoning of the world as you understand it, as you have projected it, as you have been dreaming about it. It is bringing an end to every conceivable type of delusion and slavery. Understood in this light, it is not renunciation which alienates you from the world, it becomes the only remedy for the alienation which ignorance has already created.
