The essential problem with neo-conservativism is the same as progressivism. For those that simply believe that I am one of them because I believe in laisse faire economics or have a definitive bent toward socially conservative ideals, you have severely misunderstood my political ideology. Neo-conservatism holds the same hallmarks that the social engineers on the left hold, which is that the mechanism of government is the sole arbiter of human rights, and that expansion of said government can be used to put in place the ideological opinion of those who hold power. Therein lies the problem. The few in power can proclaim doctrine, with the ability to seize assets and deny freedom, under force of arms by whatever ideology they deem fit for the masses. The product is the same, regardless of political bent. There are freedom loving people on both sides of the political spectrum, that understand that limiting the size and scope of government is the only mechanism of true liberty. Freedom is the hallmark of the individual, not the expansion of the state for the purpose of driving ideology.
