The essential thing is to bear always in mind that trouble can appear at any time. Be aware. Be ready. Be alert. - Jeff Cooper This is an actual experience of one of our students in Krav Maga Philippines . We are glad that what he has learned has made him address a a situation correctly and wisely. Thank you Kashmir Roger Yap for sharing. That was a very close call. This post is to share a potentially dangerous and life-threatening situation earlier. As I was commuting earlier at around 8:40 pm, I saw a tricycle near SM in Sta. Mesa. I then foolishly and stupidly proceeded to avail of the tricycles services. I told him to go left, but halfway through the journey, I instinctively realized that he planned to take me right (around 3-5 seconds before he ACTUALLY DID SO). While I was pondering on what to do next, I saw a small, circular gunshot-like break in the front glass of the tricycle. Realizing that this guy probably had other plans, I immediately told him to stop at an intersection (where there was a lot of people and cars passing through) and gave him enough money to compensate, yet not arouse even greater interest from him (around 10 pesos). I just felt the need to share this because kidnappings are becoming more and more prevalent, and commuting is extremely dangerous. One has to be alert and aware of his surroundings, and Im actually ashamed to have fallen for such an elementary mistake. TAKE NOTE GUYS, YOU NEED TO SEE A PLATE NUMBER AND A COLLORUM INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE TRICYCLE. I know it seems obvious, but when youre tired or stressed from work, you might not be able to discern these things. ALWAYS BE AWARE. DO NOT PANIC AND THINK ABOUT THE DECISIONS YOURE GONNA MAKE. By mapping out my choices, I chose the least risky, yet most beneficial path for an exit and made a reasonable excuse and talked to the tricycle driver as I was walking away with a sir and always respond with po or opo. I did this to lessen the chances of him actually walking towards me, but if shit hits the fan, my training would account for that. Thankfully, my Krav Maga training (in this case, tactics and mental disposition training) helped immensely. EDIT: ALSO, DO NOT BE AFRAID OF ACTUALLY TALKING YOUR WAY OUT OF THINGS. I know some people might be afraid to talk to the tricycle or taxi driver or whatever, but if you dont, you might end up in a REALLY SHITTY POSITION. Talk your way out of things, and, to make it deescalate even more, talk LOUDLY whilst walking away to attract attention so that everyone would see. Put your hands up rin (imagine being held up na nakataas kamay mo) so that people would see youre not the aggressor but the victim. These tips are from my instructor in KMP , but it helps immensely. Always keep safe guys.
