The event today in Bangor was wonderful, more than 100 people came to join in during the day from all different communities across the area - many more passed by to have a look in.Thanks to everyone who brought music, kids games and decoration. During the event there was a 12 hours cease-fire in place which allowed so many bodies to be recovered from the rubble that the death count in Gaza has passed 1000. But this makes the event all the more important as far as im concerned. It certainly wont change the world, but it has certain important effects. The thing that made me happiest was the response from Bangor and North Waless Muslim and Arab communities. It is no secret that since the various wars on terror started 13 years ago, anti-muslim hatred has been deliberately encouraged by the media and the government. How else do you get people to fight if they dont hate and fear the enemy? It is like a cancer in our society. But today we had the chance to stand with our Arab and Muslim brothers and sisters and tell them that they are welcome, that our kids can play together, and that we understand how isolated they must feel sometimes. Call me a big hippie but that means a lot to me and to community harmony in this area. Also during the event, the Israeli military announced that people were not allowed to return to their homes in the evacuated areas on pain of death. These orders are normally permanent when issued. If these new areas are added to the buffer zone that people were driven out of a few years ago, 43% of Gaza is now uninhabitable. 43% of what was ALREADY the most densely populated places on earth. over 100,000 people are sheltering with the UN (most of them are already refugees from old Palestine) and when people who are staying with friends and family are added to this number it is estimated that 200,000 Gazans have been driven from their homes - possibly never to return.
