The events In Ferguson can teach us many lessons regardless of your take on it (and by now, we all know what everyones opinions are). What can we take from this in Colorado? Well, Ive said this many times, public officials need to be held to a higher standard. If indeed the shooting of Mike Brown was malicious, then the police officer should not only be charged with the crime, but should be charged doubly. In order to help cut through the fog of conflicting reports, all police officers should be equipped with body cameras. It has been shown that this cuts back on abuse from both public servants AND the public. Win win, there. However, and I say this bittersweetly, it does seem as if America is coming around to what we libertarians have been screaming about in regards to militarized police. Can we all agree that treating law abiding protesters like potential terrorists only made the situation worse, and continues to do so? The cops have the tools and training to deal with those who are breaking the law and infringing on the rights of others without throwing tear gas into crowds and breaking out the BearCat and riot control gear. All that is doing is egging the protesters on. Come on, really? Engaging in police brutality at a protest against police brutality? Just how much testosterone do they need to spray all over the place to show us how powerful they are? The Constitution of the United States was written to limit the size, scope, and power of the government. Its time we pass some laws that keep in that same spirit, rather than ones that limit the rights of the individual. Im not trying to say that I am the perfect person for this House seat. What I am saying though, is that we need a voice in there for liberty, and I can be that voice, since no one else stepped up to be.
