The events in Paris surrounding the extremist attack on French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo and the publication of a new cartoon last week depicting the Prophet Muhammad have prompted protests in nation of Niger beginning on Friday January 16. Attacks against churches and local Christians in the towns of Niamey and Maradi have left at least 10 people dead and several churches and other properties burned. Niger is one of the world’s least-developed nations, with over 30 different ethnic groups who struggle to survive in this desert land. We have friends in this nation who are committed to serving the people of Niger through education, community development and other ministries. All of our associates are currently safe but some of our local friends have lost their homes and churches have been destroyed. Please pray for our friends in this nation and for peace in Niger.
