The events of the day make me seriously wonder why good people tend to be on the losing end and those on the dark side prevail? Is it that if they know you are a nice person and they perceive that to be a vulnerability that can be exploited? Growing up, my Dad impressed on me that if you gave your word, you stuck by it; your word was your bond - you did not need a contract and you would not think of not following through. Shame was a stigma no one could bear to either bring on themselves or their families. Today, there is no shame. If you have it in writing, it is worthless unless you can afford the better attorney and want to go through the unending hassle and expense to be the victor. The truth is so quickly subverted and twisted into something meaningless and the lie is told so easily and often that it quickly replaces the truth. Whoever said, "Cheaters never prosper" was immensely naive. We see glowing examples to the contrary every day in Washington, DC, in sports (A Rod, et al), and almost anywhere else you can imagine. As the eternal optimist, there have been some dark moments where I thought - screw it, I am going to be just like them - except it is about as easy as writing your name with your opposite hand - it is not part of what is in your nature and your brain and body balk at doing something opposite to your nature. I think of the signs that say, "Abandon All Hope" and find it impossible since it is hope that is an intrinsic part of my DNA. I credo of the glass is half full thinking is powered by the fact I have a loving and wonderful wife, Barbara. Her touch, smiles, tears, and kisses touch my heart and reassure me that there is light at the end of the tunnel. All else may crumble around you, but love endures.
