The evolution of health care is moving in the direction of integration - integrated care (primary care and behavioral health co-locating) is a strong trend. This is important in that behavioral health issues are the primary indicator of subsequent physical conditions - i.e., if your mental health is suffering eventually your physical health will too. The ACA is driving this kind of shift in providing care. What I think is interesting from a philosophical perspective is that, in the larger scope of things, we are actually moving away from specialized care and toward integrated (and also integrative - using all types of philosophies and modalities) care. Moving toward integration - to me that sounds like the goal of yoga. ;-) When we think about what it means to be healthy, there is an integration that is essential - and thats what we as yoga therapists have to offer. Yes, there will always be a need for specialized care and we certainly need to refer and be team players etc., but if we think about the continuum of care, prevention and lifestyle change as well as health promotion and reclaiming - all of the areas of care are begging for the kind of shift that yoga can offer. Yoga is not just treatment and treatment is the most expensive and least efficacious aspect of care. People who are working on policy level are focused on cost-reduction and improving outcomes, I believe we have a splendid case for an institutionalized application of yoga.
