The experience of reading your memoir was really understanding how diverse Miami is, how diverse Cuban Miami is. I mean, you have rural people doing their fincas, people from Havana, you’ve got different layers of immigration. But it’s all sort of put under the exile community,—the loss, the hatred of what happened in Cuba—this is from within, and then from without, the stereotypes—the white-privileged Cubans or the Miami mafia or whatever. So the book, I think, is one of the richest testaments of how diverse that community is. Great conversation at the Chicago Humanities Festival!
