The extremely high threshold for ORS funding and lack of extra - TopicsExpress

The extremely high threshold for ORS funding and lack of extra help available for special needs children made Seven Sharp again tonight. I think we can all relate to this item. Zac Markham, you might especially be interested to see this issue highlighted. I was interested to see the ministry tell parents to come directly to them. But I question, if the children dont meet the criteria, what exactly will the Ministry do? Id love them to tell us because there are so many tamariki that could do with extra help and are not getting it. As a junior school teacher I dont have enough digits to count the number of times over the years that Ive sought extra help for children (such as speech therapy) and been laughed at for even thinking the funding might be there to help. THIS is an area we need to follow Finland in - early intervention sounds like the best idea to me. We do it for Reading Recovery. Why not in other areas? PS - You might get a kick out of Mike advocating for smaller class sizes (well, not really...but watch to the end). I think he should consider voting Labour. tvnz.co.nz/seven-sharp/special-education-kids-video-6075781
