The eyes of the world will be on the Supreme Court of Western - TopicsExpress

The eyes of the world will be on the Supreme Court of Western Australia when it begins in February to hear a case between organic grain farmer Steve Marsh and his conventional farming neighbour Michael Baxter, who has been growing genetically engineered canola supplied by Monsanto. Steve lost organic certification on part of his farm after GE canola was found growing on his property in 2010, allegedly from the Baxter property. Donations towards Steve Marsh’s legal and travel costs can be made via safefoodfoundation.org Increasing incidents of GE contamination may lead to higher prices for organic and GE-free food, pressure to make an ‘acceptable level’ of GE in organic products, and more court cases. The March vs. Baxter case could set a precedent that may be followed in New Zealand if GE contamination happens in future.
