The failed attempt to impeach Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has altered calculations within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state as the deputy governor, Dameshi Barau Luka is set to defy previous arrangements to contest for the PDP guber ticket. Luka according to inside sources was expected only to serve out Almakura’s remaining tenure if the impeachment has succeeded while allowing ex-Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma, to run unopposed for the PDP ticket and who in turn will hand over to somebody from the Eggon ethnic group in what is perceived as the bid to placate the Eggons. The 2019 arrangement had favoured Senator Solomon Ewuga, who dumped the APC for the PDP earlier in the year, while Labaran Maku, would according to the details of the plan be allowed to continue as the representative of Nasarawa in the Federal Executive Council. The deputy governor would then be settled with the House of Representatives seat for Akwanga/ Nasarawa-Eggon/Wamba constituency. But the deputy governor has long ditched this deal, and is now running his own show, inside sources have confirmed. He has been working towards actualizing his ambition to pick the PDP governorship ticket, holding stakeholders’ meetings, and organizing youth rallies. His media aide, Danjuma Joseph, confirmed that Luka will run for the PDP ticket, when he spoke to Daily Trust recently. “2015 is by the corner, he will contest for governorship on the platform of the PDP, against the APC,” Danjuma had said. This is just as Modibbo Samari Solomon, an associate of Luka, who accompanied the deputy governor to defect from the APC, said Luka has his ambition for 2015, and denied that Luka’s ambition had been to serve out Al-Makura’s tenure.
