We understand how something such as Lysenkoism happened in a closed, state-dominated totalitarian society such as the Soviet Union, but how could such a corruption of empirical science - supposedly self-correcting and immune, for the most part, to the fevers both of democratic politics and of ideological hubris - happen here and in the West, in open societies in which science is free to be done, criticized, and published without hindrance or censorship? Or...is it? Or is anything, anymore, really free from the mediation and/or domination of Big Green Brother?
