The fasting on the tenth of Muharam the first month of the Islamic - TopicsExpress

The fasting on the tenth of Muharam the first month of the Islamic calendar was practiced earlier before Islam. The Prophet and His followers also practiced that before the month of Ramadan was prescribed. From authentic hadiths we read, Many companions narrated that: Once the Prophet ordered a person on Ashura(the tenth of Muharram) to announce, Whoever has eaten, should not eat any more, but fast, and who has not eaten should not eat, but complete his fast(till the end of the day).[related by Bukhari and Muslim] This happened before the fasting of Ramadan was prescribed. When the fasting of Ramadan was prescribed, Aaisha narrated that:The people used to fast on Ashura(the tenth day of the month of Muharram) before the fasting of Ramadan was made obligatory. And on that day the Kaba used to be covered with a cover. When GOD made the fasting of the month of Ramadan compulsory, the Prophet of GOD(BPGUH) said, Whoever wishes to fast(on the day of Ashura) may do so; and whoever wishes to leave it can do so.[related by Bukhari]. After Ramadan the fasting on Muharram was made optional as the second hadiths stated. We ask why the tenth of Muharram, why do that fasting was prescribed? Aaisha reported that: Ashura (i.e. the tenth of Muharram) was a day on which the tribe of Quraish used to fast in the pre-lslamic period of ignorance. The Prophet(BPGUH) also used to fast on this day. So when he migrated to Madina, he fasted on it and ordered(the Muslims) to fast on it. When the fasting of Ramadan was enjoined, it became optional for the people to fast or not to fast on the day of Ashura.[related by Bukhari and Muslim]. Also, When the Prophet(BPGUH) arrived at Madina, the Jews were observing the fast on Ashura(10th of Muharram) and they said, This is the day when Moses became victorious over Pharaoh, On that, the Prophet(BPGUH) said to his companions, You (Muslims) have more right to celebrate Moses victory than they have, so observe the fast on this day.[related by Bukhari, Muslim and Muwatta]. If you read thes hadiths, you will findout that the fasting on Muharram tenth was made optional after Ramadan fasting was prescribed. On that text too, they claims that if you take part in the fasting is like worshipping GOD for two years, wow!! interesting!!! Fasting on the month of Ramadan itself is half a year reward, but why Muharram two years. Further, the message also inform us that the one who spread the message to others will earn the reward of eighty(80) years of worship.
