The fear of the government seems to be the beginning of wisdom for the Nigeria Football Federation these days, as the body finds itself stuck with a coach for the senior national team that they clearly do not want to retain, but apparently cannot fire. After failing to qualify the African champions for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, many had calling for the sacking of head coach Stephen Keshi, but the NFF has been mute on the issue since the teams elimination was sealed last Wednesday. The national body had sacked of the 52-year-old coach last month, but reversed the decision reportedly on the orders of the countrys president Goodluck Jonathan. Now they are uncertain how to go about relieving him of the post with the government still apparently on Keshis side. The last time we did what we thought was best, we were forced to revert the changes by people in high places, this time around we are helpless, an unnamed board member of the NFF told SL10.ng. We are scared of announcing we wont renew his deal due to what happened last time and unless he resigns or walks away we cant help out. Backing Meanwhile a further indication that Keshi would stay on came when the chairman of the senate committee on sports, Senator Adamu Gumba, urged Nigerians to be patient and not be too quick to overhaul their teams. I always say that Nigerians are impatient because when something happens, you look at it carefully and find out why it happened the way it did before you begin to chart a new course. Gumba said on Cool FM. We lost and some people are already concluding that the team is bad and the coach is bad and we should do something. But I think that is not good. We have lost, and we should be allowed to go down, sleep well, think about it before beginning to propose the next line of action for the Nigerian Super Eagles. Keshi jibe In a different development Keshi has slammed suggestions that a foreign coach would replace him if sacked, telling Brila FM in an interview that the NFF might as well get foreign players to play for the team. The Big Boss currently does not have a contract as his previous contract expired in June. He has been managing the team on an adhoc basis.
