The fear to be a failure The fear to be a failure When confronted with the necessity to do something many people become undecided and hesitate to do something. Often the reason for this behavior is the fear to fail. Such people know that something must be done to change a situation for the better but their fear inside makes it impossible to carry out what should be done. No doubt there is always the possibility to create shy, awkward or guilty feelings but the idea that one’s activities will create embarressement exist more often than not only in those persons’ minds. The people around them don’t see it similarly. It is typical of man to look into the future. People want to know the shape of things to come as already H.G. Wells put it. Nonetheless everything that is in the future is unknown to us. Experience shows that most of peoples’ fears as to the consequences of their activities is mere fantasy. Most of these fears are a result of our education, of what we have heard or seen, of what the media try to make us believe. However in most cases these fears have no basis in reality, they are just offsprings of our imagination. What can be done to free oneself of these fears inside oneself? The answer is to make little steps. Little steps into a direction one believes one should go offer the chance to experience a feeling of success without the danger of an embarrassing failure. Once a person has managed to overcome his or her inner fears by step by step activities the feeling of success will be predominant. The fears inside will diminish with the number of moments of a feeling of success and will cease to a large extent after a while. However, as is always the case, the first step must be done by those persons themselves. And again, as is nearly always the case, the first step is the most difficult one although it is really a very small one.
