The female teacher in charge of discipline at the Navagattegama - TopicsExpress

The female teacher in charge of discipline at the Navagattegama Navodya Vidyalaya who has reportedly been humiliated by a UPFA Provincial Councillor before her students in the classroom, has expressed her reservations about going back to work without adequate security. Her husband told Ceylon Today, his wife, as the teacher-in-charge of discipline, had been checking on the students on the day in question, and had noted some pupils who had worn uniforms that were too short. Such short dresses impact on a girl’s decency and as such she has compelled those girls to undo their hems so as to lengthen their uniforms. The daughter of the UPFA Provincial Councillor, Ananda Sarath Kumara, was among the girls who had been told their uniforms were shorter than the accepted length, he said. When school was over in the afternoon, the Provincial Councillor had walked into the school, armed with a club. The teachers of the school, alarmed that his wife would be assaulted by the irate provincial councillor, had quickly ensured that she was out of sight. Thereafter, the councillor had gone away. “A while later, my wife tried to leave the school but the councillor who had been hovering in the vicinity, spotted her. He had come back to the school and had shouted at her, and had made her kneel down before the class. When my wife had got up after remaining in that position for about five minutes, he had shouted at her and had ordered her to go down on her knees, again,” he said. The councillor had come back to the school on Monday (10) and had asked my wife to apologize to his daughter as well. When Ceylon Today contacted the Provincial Councillor, Ananda Sarath Kumara, to get his response to the allegations levelled against him, he denied visiting Navagaththegama Navodya Vidyalaya, let alone humiliating the teacher. The Secretary of the Ceylon Teacher’s Union, Joseph Stalin, told Ceylon Today that he totally condemns the ugly incident, and treats it with the contempt it deserves. In the recent past, politicians had resorted to all kinds of crime against the people, including committing assaults and rape, but the passive attitude of the government has only encouraged the so-called people’s representatives to commit such crimes, and walk free. Meanwhile, the General Secretary of Ceylon Teacher Services Union, Mahinda Jayasinghe, said the country is facing this sorry situation because of the politicization of the education sector. “If the teacher in question has done anything wrong, there is a clearly laid -own procedure to take action against her. It is not for politicians to take the law into their own hands and administer punishment or victimize teachers or for that matter public officials, according to their own whims and fancies,” Jayasinghe declared.
