The ferry is a do-it-yourself operation in every way imaginable - TopicsExpress

The ferry is a do-it-yourself operation in every way imaginable – maintenance, operation, management. When the ON TIME II came out of the water for off-season refurbishment and inspection at the end of the week, this even involved assembling the cradle on which the ferry would lie. Under the command of ferry co-owner Peter Wells, the ON TIME II sailed from Edgartown, Massachusetts to Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts on November 5, 2014. She arrived in Vineyard Haven an hour or so later -- you can see a video and a few pictures of the trip a few slots down on our Timeline. In order to haul the ferry out of the water, she needed a cradle to rest on, and the one at Tisbury Marine Railway had just been refurbished. So Erik Gilley and his colleague, Captain George Fisher, put it together before putting it to use. In the first shot, we see the ON TIME II slowly climbing the rails from Vineyard Harbor up to the earthen yard where the work is now underway. In the second, we see Erik and George constructing the newly reconditioned and galvanized cradle on which the ferry will soon rest. In the third, we get a close-up view of the rudder and propeller at one end of the ferry; the buildup of grass and barnacles after two years in the water is impressive. And in the final shot, we see the II at ease in the yard before her bottom was powerwashed and prepped for a new coat of paint. Late word from Peter is that they have a few things to do with the boat, but that he cannot say how she will be out of the water until after the inspectors from the United States Coast Guard look her over thoroughly. #marthasvineyard #edgartown #edgartownharbor #chappaquiddick #chappy #ferry #chappyferry #chappaquiddickferry #resort #haulout #boatyard #shipyard
