The final afternoon with the Besselsleigh Wood group gave us 10 - TopicsExpress

The final afternoon with the Besselsleigh Wood group gave us 10 species in all, despite mostly unfavourable weather conditions. The star of the afternoon was definitely the White Admiral which put in a brief appearance (thank you for spotting it for us Alex!), closely followed by a number of Silver-washed Fritillary, including the one (pictured) that seemed to have settled down at ground level half hidden by vegetation for the night. Sadly, the Purple Emperor which had been reported on the edge of the wood about 10 days ago, didn’t grace us with his presence. Other species that gave us good views included Green-veined White, Comma, Red Admiral, Large Skipper and Small Tortoiseshell. The supporting cast was mostly made up of Ringlets and Meadow Browns. Thank you to everyone who came, and we hope you see lots more interesting butterflies in your woods in the future!
