The final episode now follows! Shortly after the Earl of Abergavenny sank, nine or so London newspapers ran articles, as did some pamphlet writers, claiming that Captain John Wordsworth had behaved rashly. However, there appears to be no supporting evidence for these allegations. The only proof of his behaviour described him as a rational man, with the admirable qualities of a Captain. Captain John, his friends and relatives had invested heavily in this voyage, hoping to make a lot of money from selling the luxury goods such as silk, porcelain, tea and spices that would have been brought back. This was common practice amongst Captains of East Indiamen and many fortunes were made this way. Captain Wordsworth lost his life; his investors may have lost their money..? With his anticipated profits, John had hoped to help his brother Williams career as a poet. This of course did not happen, but William became a famous poet and is still popular to this day! The picture show more artefacts from The Earl of Abergavenny: First image, some musket flints & the second is the head of a caulking hammer. Next week, something from the archives!!
