The financial crisis in Detroit touches the world of puppets in regard to the amazing puppet collection at the Detroit Institute of Arts, holders of a Howdy Doody puppet connected with the work of Connecticut puppeteers Rufus and Margo Rose… Chris Rose, their son, is quoted here saying "[h]is greatest hope […] would be for a philanthropist to buy the original Howdy Doody and give it to a nonprofit such as the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry at the University of Connecticut that has an extensive collection of historic puppets." However, we hope that the Detroit Institute of Arts puppet collection will remain intact and continue to be a cultural treasure for that city and the world.
