The first Bettys opened in 1919 so we have a great deal of history to draw upon when developing new designs for packaging. But occasionally we reach back even further – as is the case with this beautiful scrapbook belonging to Bettys’ Creative Manager Georgina O’Connor and the 126 year-old illustration of a robin that’s nestled within its pages. Georgina explains how it inspired the design of several of new items in our festive range, including the delightful Christmas Chocolate Selection Box. “I remember this scrapbook of Christmas cards being in my grandparent’s house, and that as a child I was always fascinated by it. When they passed away I asked my father if I could have it. “When researching the design for our new Christmas chocolate boxes we visited the Chocolate Museum in York. I was interested in photos of chocolate boxes being hand-made at Rowntrees and how the really special ones would have a painting on them, such as a cottage. It’s where the expression ‘chocolate box cottage’ comes from. “I went back to the scrapbook to see if I could find an illustration that would help us recreate this idea of a luxurious, nostalgic chocolate box that’s also a work of art. The robin was perfect. “There’s another part to this story. Joseph Rowntree was my great-great grandfather and this scrapbook came from that side of the family. It feels fitting that a Christmas card that was once received by the Rowntrees should end up on a chocolate box.” bettys.co.uk/christmas-chocolate-selection
