The first Research Seminar for 2014 will be held next Tuesday (18 February) from 1pm - 2pm in Room 2.18 (Law & Commerce Building). Details as follow: Eyes in the Sky: Constitutional and Regulatory Approaches to Drone Deployment in the US with Associate Professor Hillary Farber By the end of this decade it is estimated that 30,000 drones will occupy U.S. airspace. President Obama has set a deadline of September 2015 for the Federal Aviation Administration to promulgate new regulations for safely integrating drones into the national airspace. Law enforcement agencies throughout the U.S. have purchased drones and are testing the new technology. On June 19, 2013, FBI Director Robert Mueller told Congress that the FBI has deployed drones for surveillance on domestic soil and is developing guidelines for their future law enforcement use. With the proliferation of UAVs in our domestic airspace, one key question is the extent to which warrantless use of unmanned aerial surveillance can and should be regulated. Professor Farber will address government use of unmanned aircraft systems now and in the future, as well as the limits the U.S. Constitution and legislative action can place on this new technology.
