The first SASA Doctoral Student Colloquium will be held at the Protea Hotel Ranch Resort (The Ranch, theranch.co.za/) in Polokwane, Limpopo province (the venue is spectacular). This colloquium, which will be similar to successful and popular doctoral colloquia that are held prior to the annual conference of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) in the U.S., will provide PhD students and potential PhD students with an opportunity to learn about issues they will face in their careers upon earning their PhDs. Topics to be discussed include: •technical writing: effective curriculum vitae and research proposals •finding good research topics with focus on i) in interdisciplinary research and ii) in partnerships with government and private industry •the publication process from submission to decision •the tenure and promotion process •working outside of academia •service to the discipline and to professional societies •success in the classroom These topics, which are important to career success for PhDs but are often not covered sufficiently in PhD programs, will be discussed by a group of leading statisticians from South Africa and other nations throughout the SADC region. Speakers include: •Legesse Kassa Debusho of the University of Pretoria •Nelago Indongo of the University of Namibia •Pali Lehohla of Statistics South Africa •Vincent Micali of the Eskom Research & Innovation Centre •Alice Nabalamba of the African Statistical Journal •Delia North of the University of KwaZulu-Natal •Philimon Nyamugure of the National University of Science and Technology •Gary Sharp of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University •Tertius de Wet of the University of Stellenbosch •Khangelani Zuma of the Human Sciences Research Council •Sonali Das of the Council on Scientific and Industrial Research •Maseka Lesaoana of the University of Limpopo Students attending the colloquium will also have the opportunity to ask questions and interact with the speakers during the sessions, the breaks between sessions, lunch, and a meet & greet function on the day of the workshop.
