The first day of every new Hebrew month is called Rosh Chodesh, which means head or first of the new month. It is marked by the appearance of the new moon which symbolizes renewal. The first commandment given to the Israelites as a nation when they came out of Egypt was that of sanctifying the new month. (Numbers 10:10). What is the purpose of this? Simply that it establishes Gods prophetic calendar and sets the foundation for the observance of all of the rest of the Holy Days during the year. The sages teach that those who bless God at the new moon, sanctify His Name and declare His providence over all things, He is especially attentive to our prayers.
