The first entry I ever made to my website was solely because of Michelle Dowd and the journalism course she was teaching. We needed to make a blog. I was in a bad funk and hadnt been keeping up with a website for months. So when we needed to produce a blog to share with the class, I needed to produce and entry. With that said, sometimes I go back and cringe about things Ive written. I sit with my laptop or maybe a printed version and just like laughcry at some of the things I have allowed myself to say. Its cathartic and sometimes embarrassing. Somehow, the recap I wrote of the L.A. Zine Fest specifically for Michelles class is still one of my favorite things to go back and read. That assignment forced me to exercise photojournalism in a contemporary way that would have never happened if I didnt take that course. I went to that fest alone with a backpack and a camera and probably came out of it not realizing it was the first time I ever actually utilized that type of writing to illustrate activities I hold really near and dear to my heart: exploration, inquiry, curiosity, attaining knowledge, making sense of the human experience through documentation. Thats a big deal to me. I am a 21-year-old from an area of California that is disastrously apathetic and the simple activity of writing gives me life. So thank you Michelle, and a thank you to people who encourage blind passion and what some may call wasted time.
