The first leg of the trip is over. I am at the airport in Moscow, now, and finally away from the little boy in the seat behind me of the first flight.....the one who spent two hours kicking me in the kidneys!! My second flight, Moscow to Zurich, boards in about a half hour. On step closer to home. I have really met some wonderful people on this trip, and learned about some incredible organizations working here in Russia. I really hope I will be able to return in the not-too- distant future to do a second round of teaching, training and consultations. The NGO (nonprofit) community in Russia is very young, really only having gotten started with the dissolution of the Soviet Union. So they are still developing the practices and policies that will allow them to thrive. The government is also not quite sure what to do with them, especially those who receive support from outside Russia. There seems to be a strong resistance in the government to allowing foreign money into the country, even for charitable work. But, things will change with time, as the community matures. Im happy to be able to help in some small way. But, I think I have done all I can on this trip; its time to get home!
