The first of Brian DePalmas 3, not one, not two, but three homages to Alfred Hitchcocks Psycho. This stars Margot Kidder, before she became Lois Lane in the four Superman films; Jennifer salt, who later became Eunice Tate on the long-running sitcom Soap; Frank Finley, who played the title character in DePalmas previous film The Phantom of the Paradise; character actors, Barnard Hughes, who later appeared in Tron and The Lost Boys; oscar-nominated actor Charles Durning, who appeared in Tootsie, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, and Mel Brooks 1983 remake of To Be or Not To Be. this film also has a very suspenseful score by Bernard Herrmann (PSYCHO, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, CITIZEN KANE), who was brought out of retirement, and was living in England. In fact, this film or something of a comeback for the composer, who later went on to score Obsession, also directed by De Palma; the horror film, Its Alive; and Martin Scorseses Taxi Driver, which is credited as his final score before his death in 1975, although Its Alive 2 may be qualified as his final score also. And also to mark the anniversary of 9/11, theres a gorgeous shot of the Twin Towers, which was still being built at the time, in the scene where Margot Kidder and her boyfriend are traveling on board a ferry. This is also dedicated to fellow De Palma nut, Edward Gonzalez, Jay Pugliese, Jim Lumley, and Neil S. Bulk. Notes written by Lowell Cedric Johnson
