The first of my detailed three-part analysis of the legacy of the Indignados movement — looking at its anti-politics and the radicalisation of social struggles since. Now up at Left Flank: Arguably the Indignados have been the clearest (and most-inspiring) example of the new “anti-politics” that has followed the hollowing out of mainstream politics in the neoliberal period, in which “whoever you vote for you get the same”. To effectively challenge austerity will require a social movement that develops into an alternative form of power to institutional politics ... The Spanish example shows that anti-politics can provide the basis for such a movement, and that rather than being an “immature” phenomenon, ... it is in many important regards its opposite: a mature challenge to the system that is free of many of the social-democratic illusions of previous movements.
