The first permanent English settlement in North America was established along the James River in what became Virginia on May 10th, 1607. Jamestown, as it was called, was populated by men and boys looking for gold! One year later, Captain John Smith took a small boat and a hand full of men down the James and north into the Chesapeake Bay. Eventually he would discover, map, and name the Elk River as he sailed past what would become Elk Landing.
