The first photo was taken on 7th Nov. when we had just planted the seeds for greening the beds in the foreground. The second was today - just over a week later - with a vigorous top of green growth. Apparently when we cut at various stages and return the green biomass to the soil, were adding matter with distinct concentrations of nutrients and minerals. At the same time, the root system is being colonised by a variety of bacteria and fungi which are beneficial. These, together are helping the bed morph into a busy bio-cultural plant converting compounds in the soil to potential nutrients for plants. Look at the NED in the last picture, it has almost dissolved into the ground over the past 4 months. We calculated that this composting process reduces dry biomass to about a tenth of its original volume. Hows that for solid waste management? In the process we have a most potent basis for new growth!!
