The first time I heard Jack Bruce (RIP - see earlier post) was this tune. I was 14, living in Germany and deep into the pop thing (Radios London, Caroline, Luxembourg... the weeklies The NME, The Melody Maker... vinyl...The Kinks, The Who, The Yardbirds...). Then one day - probably on BBC - I heard I Feel Free. Wow! Right from that opening chord it was the most exciting thing Id heard up till that point (yes, more exciting than The Beatles and The Yardbirds). Everything about this tune was so different.. so ahead of its time... so musically engaging. And the sound was so full and resonant compared to the tinny productions of the day. Plus, the lyrics were great (for a 14 year-old loner like me), the harmonies were stunning, the drumming (all that hi-hat before Ginger moves to the rest of the kit), the bass fills, that great Clapton guitar solo with the vocals serving as some harmonic counterpoint of a backdrop... Its still one of my all-time fave tunes. Here the lads are doing it on Beat Club - sadly - shortly after that show (which Id watch every Saturday afternoon) switched from live to lip synch. Thrilling to this day... https://youtube/watch?v=Qb_Uu0eTNWk
