The first time that I heard George Bensons Affirmation {Breezin album 1976}, I was blown away by Harvey Masons approach, which seemed to be based on: 1. the way the composition was arrainged for George. 2. the execution of the other instrumentation, ie:{stanley banks, phil upchurch, ralph mcdonald, ronnie foster & jorge dalto.} 3. ...and of course, Harvey Masons style of playing. I mean, like, all of the textbook ingredients in groove drumming 101 are being stirred up in the pot throughout this captivating journey! Harveys knowledge and ability to apply syncopation {especially hat/snare}, in its proper place without even flinching away from the foundation of the groove, is not only a breath of fresh air to my ears...but it is also extremely impressive. I wanted to do this cover video in my SHED SERIES, to highlight Harveys and my approach to proper placement of syncopation, fills and dynamics as they are applied to groove drumming.
