The first write-up for NUFC, Thanks Scott. U8 North Moreton Hub (Narangba Rockets vs Redcliffe PCYC Thunder Strikers – Saturday, 31st August 2013) The Under 8 Rockets continued their ruthless league campaign by beating a lively Redcliffe PCYC Thunder Strikers side under the sunshine of Williamina fields. A capacity crowd of 19 (and two dogs) went home happy after witnessing the home side put on another dominant display. After the distraction of an early morning photo shoot, the Rockets regained their focus just in time to tackle the Thunder Strikers, who are so named for a reason. With several of the away team’s players large enough to play back row for the Wallabies it became clear early in the game that they could channel their superior size into Thunder strikes of the ball. Undaunted by the long ball tactics deployed by the Thunder Strikers, the Rockets Keeper Brayden guarded his goal like a sentinel, aided only by a tuft of grass which he cunningly used for positional sense. The early play saw the Rockets pressing forward with some delightful interchanges with the versatile Roisin playing creator. One particular deft pass left some of the older people in the purring crowd reminiscing of Eric Cantona in all his pomp. The first goal came after a mazy run from Oscar through the heart of the Thunder Strikers defence. Showing great balance he beat two defenders, stole a yard of space and clinically put the ball past the hapless Keeper. One – Nil. Man of the match Noah, showed that the Rockets were thinking only of Goal Pie, whipping in two curling corners in short succession that should have resulted in goals. Not to be deterred, Noah then set about scoring the second from open play on the left. Two – Nil. The Thunder Strikers got a lifeline after pouncing on a Rockets goal-kick and returning the ball with interest – Two – One. After the Thunder Strikers hit the woodwork with long range effort, the Rockets were glad when the referee blew for half time. In the second half the Rockets professionally put the game to bed. After a long range pass from the midfield, Oscar somehow managed to keep the ball on the Thunder Strikers goal line before firing the ball into the 6 yard box. The retreating Thunder Strikers defender could do nothing to prevent himself turning the ball into his own net, and although Oscar rightfully celebrated, the goal will be the subject of a post-match review by the dubious goals committee. Three - One The Thunder Strikers refused to give in and peppered the Rockets goal with several long range efforts, but excellent defending by the Rockets kept them at bay. The defensive influence of Phoenix became increasingly important as the game wore on, ably assisted by some astute positional play from the birthday girl Matilda. Joel, who confounded the Doctors by shaking off a mysterious midweek virus, also made several telling tackles to keep the Thunder Strikers at bay. The defensive unity of the Rockets was typified with a lung busting run from goal poacher Brodie, coming from nowhere to pinch the ball from one Thunder Striker about to shoot. The tireless Max who continues to attract attention from the Premier League’s top flight, put in another commanding performance in midfield and his continual drive forwards culminated in pressure that lead to the fourth goal. After a flowing move forward, Noah latched onto a loose ball and with his weaker right foot curled the ball into the gaping net. Four – One. In a post match interview, Coach Sean Moriarty was quoted as saying “Brilliant performance from the team. They are unstoppable at the moment. You can’t teach that”. With only one game left, the Rockets are on the cusps of history, knowing another win will mean they have not lost all season in the U8 North Moreton Hub. A sell-out crowd is expected to witness the Rockets final game which takes place on Williamina Fields at 9am on Saturday, 7th September.
