The flower of a phalaenopsis orchid looks like a moth in flight, - TopicsExpress

The flower of a phalaenopsis orchid looks like a moth in flight, hence the common name for the plant is “Moth Orchid”. The word “Phalaenopsis” originates from the Greek words phalaina, meaning “moth” and opsis, meaning “resembles”. Phalaenopsis orchids are unique low-light orchids, which can bloom for 1 – 2 months. A delicate balance of poise and elegance, phalaenopsis orchids are relatively low maintenance, and are one of the most popular varieties of orchids for both beginners and enthusiasts Light Phalaenopsis will flourish indoors, with indirect sunlight being the most advantageous. Avoid direct sunlight, as the leaves will burn easily due to excess sun exposure. Do place the phalaenopsis in the same place and position as it will grow and bend towards a light source. Water Plants should be watered only once a week. Do not water again until the medium is dry. You may check the moisture level of the potting medium by testing the soil with your fingers. Beware of over-watering, as excess water will lead to root rotting and poor air circulation around the roots. Do not spray water on the leaves, flower or crown (where the plant stem meets the roots), Never allow plant to stand in water or allow water to accumulate in the pot to avoid decaying diseases. Fertilizer When the flowers are in bloom, fertilizers are not required. Less is more when it comes to fertilizers and water. However, if you wish to use fertilizers, dilute one teaspoon of phosporus fertilizer with water. Humidity Phalaenopsis enjoy moist air, ideally with a humidity level of 55-75%. A tray of water can be placed under the pot to increase humidity surrounding the phalaenopsis in dry weather conditions. Do not let the pot sit in the tray of water. Instead, separate them with pebbles or stones. Rebloom With additional care, it normally takes about 6-12 months for a rebloom to occur. If your plant has healthy, thick, green leaves, cut the old flower stem up high, just above a node and below the lowest bloom. The plant will frequently send out a new flowering branch at that location. If your plant has thin, wilted leaves, it is best to cut the flower stem all the way down, about 1 inch from the base. This will deter the plant from weakening itself by re-blooming right away. Carefully water and fertilize the plant, to prepare for future flowering on a brand-new stem. Be patient with Phalaenopsis, as it is, like most orchids, a relatively slow-growing plant floral-architect/about-us/phalaenopsis-care.html
