The focus for Humanities Month today is music. The OCCC jazz ensemble will perform this evening at 7:30 in the Bruce Owen Theater. Admission is free. If youve not yet heard this group of musicians, you are in for a treat. Come support your fellow students as they perform tonight. And at noon today in room CU 3 of the College Union, Professor Sharon Vaughan will host 1960s Art and Rock. No decade in the history of the United States has produced music that not only was front and center in some of the most significant events and changes in American society, but also defined the meaning of social and political justice for a generation. From Bob Dylan and Peter, Paul, and Mary to Curtis Mayfield and Sam Cooke, political messages were delivered in great music that takes one back to the 1963 March on Washington or the anti-war protests in Berkeley. A few surprises have made the list of songs that have left a lasting image of one of the most remarkable and turbulent decades in American history.
