The focus for this week for our Toddlers and Preschoolers has been on the importance of motor development. Motor development starts from the very beginning, even before birth while baby is in utero, as we can see by their kicks and rolls while still inside Mummy. While these movements are in the beginning involuntary and primitive reflexes, children are capable of learning how to inhibit these reflexes and control their own body movement in response to stimuli, or to satisfy a need or want. Providing early opportunities and stimulation for motor development, such as the activities your child is involved in every week at Gymbaroo, will help your child inhibit primitive reflexes, integrate their senses to work together, and develop their ability to perform skills and actions that require the crossing of their invisible midlines. While gross motor skills are those that involve rolling, crawling, walking, jumping, running and climbing, it is also important for children to be exposed to activities that require fine motor skills. The provision of these activities can be of particular importance for boys, as often the toys and activities of girls (generally speaking) provide opportunities for these fine motor skills to develop. Many boys toys, on the other hand, are big and robust. The fine motor activities available over the last two weeks, such as the use of small tongs and pegs to pick up objects, have been aimed at allowing boys (and girls) the opportunity to develop their hand-eye coordination and fine motor control, in particular the muscles in their fingers and hands, along with their visual-perception and motor planning. This comes in very useful as children discover the act of drawing, and later the development of the correct pencil grip and muscle stamina required for writing.
