Whats better carfax or nada???? in trying to determine if i should buy a used car which should i use the carfax or nada???? im looking into buying a salvaged nb and used nada which shows the salvage title but also does not show a reports of any type of accident....how can the car be salvaged???? Yup - None of the reporting services (which is what they really are) can report anything which isnt already a public record. If I stuff my car into a guardrail and do $5K worth of damage to the side of it and drive it home and repair it myself, nothing will ever show up because A) It wasnt a reported accident and B) No insurance companies were involved. A car is only totaled when an insurance company decides its cheaper to buy the car than it is to repair it - At that point, they report it for a salvaged title. In many states, you can buy totaled vehicles, rebuild them take them in for an inspection and then get the title cleaned so the car no longer shows up as a salvaged vehicle. Thats were CarFax and the others are of benefit, because even though the car now has a normal, clean title, it has a history which shows it was once totaled and that would alert you that youve buying a very damaged and subsequently repaired vehicle, so you should look it over very carefully for signs of shoddy work. I never knew that NADA did VIN background searches. I would recommend Experians AutoCheck. Many times AutoCheck has reported issues that Carfax was unable to find. So my friends, in lieu / consideration of these statements, who would you say is the more thorough service?
