The following are the ten basic divisions, from which the seventy-three sects have arisen: The Ahl us-Sunnah wa al-Jamaah, Firqat an-Najiyyah; the Khawarij, the Rawafidh; the Mutazila; the Murjiah; the Mushabbihah; the Jahmiyyah; the Zirariyyah; the Najjariyyah; and the Kullabiyyah. The Ahl as-Sunnah wa al-Jamaah constitute one single group. The Khawarij are subdivided into fifteen sects. The Mutazila are made up of six distinct sects. The Murjiah account for twelve sects, and the Rawafidh for no fewer than thirty-two. The Jahmiyyah, the Najjariyyah, the Zirariyyah and the Kullabiyyah represent only one sect each, while the Mushabbihah are made up of three sects. This gives us the grand total of seventy-three sects, which tallies exactly with the reported statement of the Prophet (s.a.w.).
