The following editorial was in the local paper years ago..it struck me so much that I saved it in a book. Its a little long but I promise you worth the read. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EACH OF YOU..........THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU CANCEL CHRISTMAS. They have cancelled Christmas in Bethlehem. The Christmas tree stands bare and unadorned,there will be no candle lit walks to the manger,no festive Christmas concert.You say you have cancelled Christmas,too-in your heart.You suffered your own mayhem and destruction,had your fill of Silent night for weeks now. Maybe your exsusted from caring for a sick family member,weary from fighting your way back from illness or injury. Maybe your marriage has flat-lined..you wonder what attracted you to each other to start with.Maybe there are family members you no longer speak to,if you saw them today you would barely utter a civil hello.MAYBE the greens and reds of the holiday are colorless because the lens your looking through is gray and dirty.Think twice before you cancel Christmas...that baby in the manger didnt come to make a robust holiday season at the stores,or to put frost on your windows or rose on your cheeks.Christ didnt come to paint a picture perfect Currier and Ives memory.Christ cam for three dimensional people,people with thin skin,blind spots and pent up anger. He came for people who hurt and suffer and struggle and those that get depressed at holiday time.He came for those that have everything but feel empty inside.He came for those who mangle relationships and turn priorities upside down.The essense of Christmas is that God sent his son,not to punish or condemn mankind but to offer a helping hand.Some say when people open their hearts to Christmas the son of God works wonders.Some say he has gently dried tears when they cried softly in the night...showered them with gifts like Faith,hope and love. Think twice before you cancel Christmas,this may be the year you need it the most.
