[email protected] RE. October 22, 2014 terrorist attacks on our Nations capital Friday, October 24, 2014 Mr. Ferris, In reference to the October 22, 2014 terrorist attacks on our country I have suggested to the Canadian Department of National Defence, The RCMP, the Srgnt At Arms, and Parliament Hill staff that we set a petition to Ottawa to have a permanent statute of Corporal Nathan Cirillo forever standing guard over the unknown soldier memorial to send a symbolic message back to those who attacked our country that although they have claimed his life, his memory and all that he represents for us as a country will not be taken from us through fear or intimidation. We live in a much different world now. Our enemies are no longer known to us. They are not nations, they are individuals. Our world is more opaque, the war we face lurks in the shadows and attack unarmed, often innocent and defenceless citizens. We must not let fear define nor defeat us. Ideas can unite or divide people in their gravest hour. Many of the worlds great movements, have flowed from thoughts and ideas, from hope. It is an idea of extremism that is driving those who seek attack our common peace, our freedom, our way of life. Let the ideals and courage of our great nation stand in defiance of hatred, violence and oppression. Alfred, Lord Tennyson n his work entitled Ulysses wrote. Tho much is taken, much abides; and tho We are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. Erecting a permanent statute of Corporal Nathan Cirill of forever standing guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier is symbolic of the idea that while bullets claimed his life, the ideals and essence of who he was and what he represents to us as a nation, will never die. Corporal Nathan Cirill will forever be there to remind them. In closing, I would like to share with you a poem written after September 11th terrorist attacks: Thousands of blossoms, red, brown, white, yellow, black scattered on ground made tender by their falling. This human body, more fragile than the dew drops on the countless tips of morning grass. My wailing voice is the bright September wind and in the dark night, silence speaks: I will die only when love dies and you will not let love die. In the face of death, let us honor life. As scripture tells us, let us not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. DO NOT LET LOVE DIE. Let us find the courage to seek peace without fear. So that today, as we lay our sons to rest, the dove will be free at last. Please consider supporting this by way of petition. These kind of symbolic gestures are one of the most important tools in our arsenal against the kind of war terrorism wages against our country and the values we hold dear as a nation.
