The following email was shared by a fellow Learning Community member: Next week will mark two months since Michael Brown, an 18-year-old unarmed black man, was shot dead by Ferguson police, sparking a national conversation about racial profiling, police militarization, and our broken system of justice. Two months later, police officer Darren Wilson is still free, while black and brown communities continue to be plagued by police misconduct and institutional racism. In just ten days, people of conscience from around the country will be traveling to St. Louis to stand with the people of Ferguson for a Weekend of Resistance Oct 10-13. The weekend will include street actions, panel discussions, a block party, hip hop, faith-based events, nonviolent direct action trainings, and more. Please consider getting involved with this historic national mobilization! We are at a crossroads, and now is a critical moment to put commitment to social justice into action by helping make this event a success. Here are three simple things you can do -- We need you! 1. Be A Local Volunteer! Please click to fill out this form to volunteer: https://docs.google/forms/d/1lY3tqO14Fx8Q9vFKtcsfkGfs_9bt8fJRLQcT27Y1law/viewform We need marshalls, medics, hospitality, helpers, and more. There will be a local volunteer training at 4pm on October 5th at Greater St. Marks Church - 9950 Glen Owen Drive (@Chambers Rd.), St. Louis, MO 63136. Please fill out the form and come to the training! 2. Offer Hospitality to out-of-town folks. If you can offer a home-stay, post it here: handsupunited.org/come-to-ferguson#travel. Are you associated with any church or a school? Could you ask whether that space could be made available as sleeping space for that weekend? This entails making the space available and having a few folks from your place maintain the space during the weekend. If this is a possibility, or if you have questions about weekend housing, email Colleen Kelly . 3. Show Up! Numbers are important at an event like this - your presence matters. Mark your calendars and for more information you can visit FergusonOctober, RSVP on Facebook, follow @FergusonOctober and #FergusonOctober on Twitter, or text HandsUP to 90975.
