The following is a plea from some of us who would like to preserve the wild type clean green parrotlet. Written by my friend Cindy Rice. Proper Parrotlet Pairing Note: Given the near impossibility of importing wild type green blood, the gene pool we have to work with demands ethical husbandry if we wish to preserve the species, healthy, in aviculture. Despite much information both online and in books on parrotlet breeding, people still have trouble learning about proper pairing. Hopefully the following will help fill that gap. Once a Gene is Mutated, it is Forever Changed. After a few generations of Color Mutation breeding, a parrotlet wants to pick up things with his foot, but cannot seem to remember how.. He seems to remember parrotlets loudly chirp at the sound of crinkling plastic, but doesnt do it heartily. Visual Mutation Trails with it Strings of Genetic Code You Cannot See After a few generations of Color Mutation breeding a parrotlet wants to metabolize certain foods like pellets, but his kidneys and liver wont cooperate. Successful Breeding Strives for 4 Golden Rules Fertility, Longevity, Health, Temperament After a few generations of Color Mutation breeding Fertility drops Offspring become smaller Dont live as long as they should Resistance to disease breaks down Ability diminishes Is this the Stock we want To Pass to the Next Generation of Aviculturists? Successful Color Mutation Breeding Requires a Plan Wild Parrotlets Choose Their Own Mates If the resident birds in your yard inbred their lines would weaken. Birds Sing Complicated Songs During Breeding Season In these songs a bird hears little nuances in a slowed down version which the human ear cannot distinguish. What are they saying? Perhaps they recite their entire lineage. Dont Lose The Birdsong Responsible breeding requires meticulous record keeping. No lineage should be lost. Strong Surviving Wild Lines would Perpetually Breed Visually Green If you wish to Color Mutate you must periodically reintroduce Wild Type Green documented Clean: of any aviculturally introduced color mutated influence. Responsible Color Breeding Pairs Visual Green With Visual Color Do not mutation breed a visual color mutant with another visual color mutant There are rare exceptions to this rule. One Should Not Breed Beyond What He Himself Understands You Are Forever Responsible For What You Breed Pairing Mutations Does Not Create A New Mutation Faulty thinking believes stacking splits results in new mutations. You can give it a fancy name but its only a different expression of already existing mutations. Examples: Pastel Blue expresses pastel + blue American White is a color expression of American Yellow + Blue To think differently can lead down the path to Lethal If You Want To Discover A New Mutation Breed Green Within the Wild Type already exists all beautiful genetic code for random combinations to express itself as a new pattern or color. This code may even randomly come together in a mutation breeding but likely wont be recognized, as the mutation(s) you are breeding will obliterate it. What Is That In Your Aviary? Breeding clean wild type green is how color mutations came about in the first place. You can recognize it, back breed it, line breed it true if you like. - Instant Fame! Every Species Has Its Lethal Gene Combination As color mutates from one generation another, If the birdsong is lost, Color mutations can Stack up. The More Stacked Split Pairings The Better Chance Of Discovering The Lethal Gene Combination - Instant Fame! Not a good idea. Lethal Combination results in 25% dead or soon dead Not a pretty sight. If a pair routinely hatches 3 out of 4 they may be breeding Lethal Stacking Splits Results In Redundancy example Mixing Fallow or Pastel lines with American Yellow produces no desired visual result. Unless you want to make Parrotlet Soup. Dont do it. Back Up Stock With Wild Type Green It is recommended to Outcross to documented clean Wild Type Green every 3 or 4 generations Lets look at your parents, grandparents, great grandparents great great grandparents. Thats 4 Generations or 30 Pair Of Chromosomes between you & the Wild Type Green.. Add another generation - 64 pair of chromosomes In a mere 6 generations - you get 128 pair. See how it goes? How long shall we weaken our lines? Every Few Generations STOP Pairing Visuals To Old Green Splits What undesired genetic information do we pass along with color? Strengthen the lines. Make new splits. Understand The Importance of Wild Type Clean Green To the parrotlet, strongly pigmented wild type green means everything to their future. Incorporate Green Into Your Breeding Program. Consider acquiring a pair or more for yourself Breed them, trade them, multiply & proliferate them Create cooperative breeding circles for this purpose Trade stock with overlapping breeding circles Like Ripples In A Pond As education spreads Do It For the Love of The Let Note: There currently exists no parrotlet bird club.
