. The following is a public announcement concerning Cabell County Shelter dogs. public announcement: We have given the shelter long enough to release a statement on their behalf, which they have NOT done. AARF is very disappointed that they are being so irresponsible and putting so many dogs in jeopardy of contracting this deadly virus. If you have adopted ANY dogs from the Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter in the year of 2014 you need to be on the lookout for signs of distempter. Dogs can take MONTHS to break with this dreaded virus. Early symptoms appear to be a simple upper respiratory infection. My personal suggestion would be to contact your vet today and have your dog examined and explain that there are multiple reported cases of distemper; the common factor is they all originated from Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter. AARF is working under the guidance of an experienced vet to assure our animals are healthy. Sadly any animals that are showing signs and symptoms we have made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize. We have accumulated THOUSANDS of dollars in expenses treating animals that were exposed. Our kennel is on strict lock down until we are given the blessing of a vet to open our doors again. Any animals that will attend adoption events will be animals that have NEVER been at our kennel in the year of 2014 or from CWAS, along with AARF will require a vet exam PRIOR to attending one of our events. We are sick and heartbroken that after we notified CWAS that we had positives tests returned from dogs we acquired from them they still did not close down, nor alert the public. This virus has not just affected AARF. I know of at least 5 other reported cases that were NOT within the AARF program. How far are they willing to let this spread? Once again I am saddened they have decided not to be responsible and alert the public. I am sorry I waited 24 hours to post this, however I was trying to give them time to be TRUTHFUL and do the right thing....sadly they did NOT do this. Shame on them!!!!!
