The following is the 3rd informational flyer and survey in the Strategic Plan series. The focus on this flyer and survey is on STEM/CTE (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) (Career Technical Education). Please take a moment to review the information and answer the short survey. Preparing a Workforce Focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) will give students important foundational knowledge and access to incredibly rich future opportunities, but also STEM disciplines are tightly aligned with the 21st century skills. Preparing our future workforce requires school divisions to include STEM and CTE (Career Technical Education) courses that embed 21st century skills into the curriculum. These skills include critical thinking, innovation, problem solving, communication, and collaboration. When students work on projects with authentic and real world problems, these skills must be used to create meaningful learning experiences. MCPS is a member of the Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center Advisory Committee. This committee includes members Ben Taylor, Dr. Chad Patton, Dr. James Thornton, Dr. Kristy Somerville- Midgette, Cindy Kirby, Debra Smiley, Earle Horne, Gail Moody, Glenn Barbour, Kim Callis, Natalie Coronas, and Scott Burnette. This committee meets to discuss and plan future programs for students. Recently, the area of focus is encouraging MCPS students to attend programs such as High Performance Technology, Heating, Venting, and Air Conditioning, and Welding courses at the South Hill Center for Dual Enrollment credit. The committee is interested in providing opportunities for the students of Mecklenburg to gain skills that meet the needs of future employers in Mecklenburg County. This type of partnership will help the community create a workforce ready future. The division values the input from the community. For more information on STEM and CTE, please review the flyer and then take a moment to complete the STEM/CTE survey.
