The following message is being sent home with K-8 students today (Transitional Kindergarten students have already left and will receive a letter tomorrow), and we are posting it on facebook as well to help the word get out: As a result of discussions held over the past months at the district safety committee meetings, we are securing the hallways at Modoc Middle School and Alturas Elementary School, much like the high school has been doing for some time. This means that all doors leading into the main buildings will be locked. Visitors who need access to the schools through the main entrances can knock and staff will open the door. Staff members whose classrooms open directly to the outside have gotten into the habit of keeping their doors locked at all times and this practice will continue. The district is currently researching options for a camera/buzzer system that will allow staff to buzz visitors into the main buildings, but until that system is in place, we will continue to secure the hallways in this low-tech manner. We will continue to review our safety policies, both at the site and district levels, and will continue to keep you updated as changes are made.
