The following stems from the recent kidnappings in Nigeria. Rants on Facebook can be tedious yet we are teaching children these days to become critical thinkers so as a teacher, I try to partake in some debate from time to time. This particularly concerns those who are hashtagging and taking selfies to raise awareness.. The problems in Africa are a result of those in the western world who continue to consume beyond their needs. There are companies who are making billions from resources such as uranium, gas, oil etc which are all found in the northern region of Africa. Instead of hashtagging, take a look at how those who are pretending to care are benefiting from the crisis. Now, if you are actually interested in helping, humanitarian aid is in my opinion, the most effective way to make a difference. Educating the local population is paramount to policy change. I myself am always conscious of what I could offer in terms of education and am willing to help out in the future. What they dont need however are more soldiers going out and killing exploited, starving and uneducated teenagers who kidnap people because they dont earn enough to feed themselves or their families. If I am wrong about this next bit then sorry but this is how these things eventuate. The Nigerian government under the guidance of the US will negotiate a deal with Baku Haram to release the girls. The government will them earn public support, allowing them to continue to make corrupt energy deals with the US (many of these governments have been propped up by the US for this exact reason). This is the world we now live in. We have to be the change that we want to see and lets face it, our society is far too self-indulged. That being said, I still think there is hope given the recent changes in our own policies. I hope that we continue to think critically about issues and not just cast them aside. Heres an article to read.
