The following story is to appear in tomorrows local papers. Kids switched on to athletics. The Kids’ Cross Country Serieskicks off on June 30, with OlympicHarriers hosting one of the events in Grenada North One of the organisers, Jo Murray, says there is no prerequisiteto enter – it’s for kids who love running and want to take part in either one race or a series over the coming months.‘‘Athletics Wellington is keen to promote running as a sport to a wide range of kids and their parents. Kids are in the middle of the school cross country season at the moment, so a lot of children are getting the opportunity to take part in school races.‘‘These then lead on to interschool zone events and regionals which is fantastic.’’ All four of the series’ races are held on Sunday mornings – so kids can still take part in Saturday sport – at 10.30am, with the last race at noon. The first event is being held at Karori Park on June 30, and Olympics’ event is at Grenada North Park football fields in Tawa on July 14. The last two are at Trentham Memorial Park in Upper Hutt on August 11 and then from the Wellington Harrier Clubrooms on Mt Victoria in Wellington on September 8. Participants will be aged from year 3 up to year 10, although if younger ones want to take part they can enter in the year 3 grade. Murray says they are encouraging friends to enter as a team of three – maybe from the same football, rugby, netball or hockey team – with individual and team certificates won for the top three placings. There will also be overall series medals. Those that enter five days out from any event will receive a personalized race bib on the day that they get to keep. Olympic Harriers, Karori Athletics Club, Upper Hutt Athletics Club and Wellington Harrier Athletic Club have all been working together to make this series a success, Murray says. ‘‘It’s been great having clubs work together to offer events in their local communities.’’As a result, he says, more clubs in the region are lining up to run other events for kids in the near future in both cross country and athletics ❚ Go to athleticshub.co.nz.
