The following text is the article that the Press Sentinel printed in the B Section of this weekends newspaper about the Jesup Community Gardens. They have given us space once a month to let the community know what we are doing in the garden. Please share this with your friends. Jesup Community Gardens Project Update JCGP has been very busy the last few weeks. Since this is the first of our monthly articles, we will give our readers a little introduction: Our mission is to serve as a teaching and hands-on growing garden for all citizens of Wayne County, Georgia. We began around the first of the the year, our “grand opening” being Earth Day, April 26, 2014. The City of Jesup has given us the use of about an acre of land right next to the Boys and Girls Club, at the end of East Orange Street (also next to the new Police Department). Chronicles of our recent activities and our vision can be found on our web site (jesupcommunitygarden.org) and our Facebook page (facebook/jesupcommunitygardens). Our first summer garden was a success, thanks to our faithful volunteers who helped us start the “rough draft” portion of the of our raised beds garden. The Wayne County Garden Club Council members did a great job as first mentors of our classroom education project for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Altamaha Area, and the kids were eager learners and dug right in. In addition to working with the Boys & Girls Club we are in the process of adopting the Fairhaven Shelter as a part of our next phase of projects. To help us expand our outreach, the City of Jesup gave us a big boost this fall by supplying full irrigation for the whole acre of land. We appreciate all they do and could not do this project without their support. Thank you, City Council members, Mike Deal, and all city employees who have contributed to the growth of this community garden. In order to move forward we have met with several groups at the Wayne County High School. Members of the STEM Club (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) will be coming out this Friday to help prepare the plots for fall and winter growing. We have also met with advisors of the CTAE (Career, Technical and Agricultural Education) group who will offer students an opportunity to get involved with our Garden Project as community service. This Saturday Harry Bennett has offered to bring over his tractor and till the entire garden site in preparation of our winter plots and cover crop, and Wednesday, October 22nd, Jesup’s EAM/Novathin employees will come out to help replant our fall/winter garden. Community gardens provide food, but just as importantly they seed the ground for neighborhood revitalization, social and economic self-empowerment, micro-enterprises, social interaction, and neighborhood beautification. The Jesup Community Gardens Project is a year-round program. We hope your family, church, club, business or civic group will join with us as we work together to make Jesup and Wayne County an even better place to grow and live. We welcome volunteers and in-kind garden donations, and can give you a non-profit receipt for your donations. Please contact us at wriggins3@gmail or 912-559-2352.
