The following was written by my dear friend, and Texas-cousin, Jim Thompson. It is a very thought-provoking read on Amazing Grace. Please feel free to share this, and give credit to Jim. The Sound of Grace The song says, “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound …” But what in the world does grace sound like? Is it a whispered “I love you,” the silence of a smile, The babble of a toddler quickly growing into a tyke? Rather, I believe that the sound of grace Sounds like the pain that twisted His face, That wracked His bones and contorted His frame As He gave up His life in disgrace and shame. The sound of grace, as strange as it may seem, Is like a cry in the night, or maybe a scream … The sound of a whip lashing His flesh, His gasps as the soldiers tore gashes afresh. The slaps, the agony of that thorny crown, The bruising of knees as He fell down Beneath the awesome weight of the cross. Yes, the sound of grace is the sound of loss, The sound of a maul driving a spike through His hand, The thud of dropping into a hole so the cross would stand Like a monument to the terrible, awful, cruel pain, The sound of His blood splattering the stones like rain. The horrible thirst, the gasping breath, The last few words before His death. Yes, the sound of grace is the sound of strain, A concert made up of the noise of pain. Grace doesn’t sound like what we like, It’s the sound of a hand being pierced by a spike, And the sound of a soul pierced by guilt, Then forgiven by love, by the blood that He spilled. So never forget the anguish of the nails and the maul, That He transformed into grace by His love for us all.
